Over seven months, 30 fur farms, seven hours of footage and one and a half thousand photographs, Animal Defenders International investigated a random sample of Finnish fur farms. This investigation exposes the terrible suffering that is part and parcel of the fur industry.

Foxes and mink are wild animals but in fur farms, they cannot cope with the unnatural environment they find themselves in. Worse still, the conditions in these farms are awful: their short, miserable lives are spent in squalid surroundings full of fear and distress, suffering injuries, infection and deformities. All for an unnecessary product for which a variety of alternatives are available.

It is time for designers who use fur, and the people who wear it, to take responsibility for the way that the product they are wearing has been produced.

This is the story of Cholita, the ‘real life Paddington bear’. Spectacled bear Cholita was snatched from the wild as a baby. She spent years in the circus confined to a tiny cage. Her fingers were cut off and her teeth broken, leaving her completely defenceless. Her sad and stressful life caused her hair to fall out - where she should have thick, black fur she has none. Cholita was confiscated from the circus by authorities but no permanent home could be found for her, so she stayed in a zoo for ten years. Animal Defenders International heard of Cholita’s plight and vowed to save her. We brought her back to our Operation Spirit of Freedom rescue centre and nursed her back to better health, helping her arthritis and breathing troubles, while building her a forever home in her native habitat. These two sisters were abandoned by the circus with no food or water. We had to find a way of getting them onto our truck in the middle of the village where they had been dumped. Once the circus knew we were coming, they just made off.

Though we were delighted they were returning to health, we counted down the days until we could get them to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, where they now live in peace.

Animal Defenders International (ADI) has launched the first nationwide initiative in the U.S. about the use of elephants giving rides or making appearances at public events. At the heart of the campaign is a new DVD narrated by Emmy award winning TV host Bob Barker entitled 'No Fun For Elephants,' featuring harrowing undercover footage from inside elephant training facilities in California, as well as abuse of an elephant on tour by a Texas-owned company. The 'No Fun For Elephants' DVD is being mailed to event organizers across the U.S., including board members of county fairs, renaissance fairs and organizers of town parades, urging them to adopt a humane 'no elephant rides or performances' policy, in view of the suffering these animals endure.

The ADI Rescue Team in Bolivia report on the operation to rehome Tilin! In 2010, the ADI Rescue Team rescued and rehomed four ex-circus lions to a sanctuary in the USA, building them a brand new enclosure. ADI also relocated Tilin the ex-circus baboon to a new home in the UK, where he will lives with his companion Tina in peace, happiness, and surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature - a far cry from the circus beastwagon.

Meet Kimba. He's the 25th lion to be rescued by ADI in a record-breaking mission to empty Bolivia of every circus animal in the country. This follows the 2010 rescue of four lions, and will bring the overall total of lions rescued from Bolivia by ADI to a staggering 29.

Kimba's Story:
A specialist ADI team flew down to Tarija in southern Bolivia and returned with an elderly lion called Kimba, lion number 25.
Kimba had been living in a small concrete zoo enclosure for the past 11 years after being dumped there by a travelling circus. Before Kimba was rescued, ADI and the Bolivian authorities swooped on circuses all over Bolivia and confiscated all of their animals. Indigenous or domestic animals were homed in Bolivia, and ADI airlifted all the lions to the US. Bolivia's DGB had requested ADI take the old lion.

ADI flew down to Tarija in a C130 Hercules that had seen service in the Vietnam War. They took one of the crates that had already been prepared for the Operation Lion Ark airlift

At the zoo, the ADI team had to break down a wall and cut through metal railings to get to Kimba, but he was soon lured into the travel crate by ADI President Jan Creamer. He was then driven to the airport, with members of the Tarija public applauding on the roadside, and loaded onto the TAB cargo aircraft. It was a smooth hour flight back to Santa Cruz, during which Kimba was very relaxed and showed no signs of stress, before a slow drive to the ADI Operation Lion Ark compound. The ADI team, including a veterinarian, joined Kimba on the flight and were able to monitor him throughout.

In the ADI compound Kimba saw and heard other lions for the first time, he went straight into his new holding cage and had a meal before calling to the other lions.

The dramatic lion rescue began in November 2010 when, in a series of seizures all over Bolivia, ADI working with the Bolivian authorities including the DGB and Santa Cruz Governor's Office, started to remove the animals from different circuses spread across the country.

The moves were to enforce Bolivia's Law 4040 which bans the use of animals in circuses, which came into force after ADI officers went undercover to expose the horrific abuse in circuses across South America. The legislation effectively shut down the country's animal circus industry at a stroke -- the first time such a thing has happened in the world.

The huge rescue operation -- the first time a country's animal circus industry has been shut down in this way -- attracted the backing of a number of celebrities including Bob Barker, Jorja Fox, Brian Blessed, Twiggy and a host of others who called on the public to send donations to help the rescue.
